Chihiro, a sulky 10 year-old, reluctantly follows her parents into a mysterious tunnel in the forest. The tunnel leads to a ghostly town where a sumptuous banquet is laid out Chihiro's parents fall upon the delicious food ravenously, but are transformed into pigs before Chihiro's eyes. They have unknowingly strayed into an enchanted world inhabited by ancient gods and magical beings, ruled over by a demonic sorceress, Yubaba.

In this strange and perilous new world forbidden to humans, Chihiro is fortunate to find an ally in the enigmatic Haku. In order to survive and rescue her parents, Haku tells Chihiro that she must work and make herself useful. She makes a contract with Yubaba and begins work in the bathhouse for the fantastic creatures of this world. Though virtually powerless and with only an inkling of hope, Chihiro learns and grows in character through the events that follow. But will she ever be able to rescue her parents and return to the human world?
